Outstanding Alumnus for Professional Achievement
DR. MARIA GLADIOLA MONLEON-SANTOS, PhD Class 1966 Dr. Maria Gladiola Monleon- Santos, presently the Dean of the Graduate School of Adamson University and a faculty of the Psychology Department, was born on June 8, 1951. She is the third child of Fernando B. Monleon, an acclaimed writer, poet and book author, and Consolacion P. Conde, a schoolteacher. She has been in the academe for around forty years. Previously, she served as Dean of the College of Science for five years, and also taught part time at the Department of Advanced Professional Education of the Philippine Normal University. A consistent honor student, she, together with her sister, Maria Adalia, finished their secondary schooling with the highest honors at Juan Sumulong High School, Q.C. Maria Adalia, 15 years of age and older by one year, was the Class Valedictorian, and Maria Gladiola, the youngest graduate in her batch finished second as Class Salutatorian. She graduated Cum Laude in AB Psychology, minor in English, at St. Joseph’s College, Q.C., and went on to finish her MA Psychology at Centro Escolar University, Manila. She holds a PhD degree in Educational Psychology from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, graduating as Class Valedictorian. She is a member of the Psychological Association of the Philippines where she served as Board Director for a term, the Asian Psychological Association (APsyA), Asia-Pacific Educational Counsellors Association (APECA), the National Research Council of the Philippines, and is a founding member of the Higher Education Association of Values Educators-National (HEAVEN). An advocate of Christian Psychology and Positive Psychology, she has conducted a number of workshops and seminars and has presented research papers in local and international conferences. In addition to all these, she also authored a textbook in General Psychology. Attributing all that she has as God’s gifts to her, and what she has become as her gift to God, she intends to resume her parish volunteer work as inspirational speaker in the Parish Renewal Experience (PREX). PROFESSOR ANACLETO ABIS Class 1967 Professor Anacleto Abis is presently the head medical technologist of the Quezon City Health Department and is also Assistant Professor III of the College of Arts and Sciences at the Central College of the Philippines. He also taught at Philippine Women’s University in Manila with a rank of Assistant Professor. Professor Abis has been very active in providing voluntary services for civic, government and religious organizations. Some of his involvements include the following: Lay Minister at Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, St. Paul the Apostle Parish and St. Camillus Chaplaincy Ministry at Philippine Heart Center for Asia; Resource Speaker in Pre-Cana at Family Life Ministry, St. Paul the Apostle Parish; Election Watchdog of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV); Community Outreach Member of the Philippine Association of Medical technologists. Aside from these, Professor Abis is also actively engaged with civil society organizations, namely: Servi Dei Marriage Encounter Community in Quezon City as member of Council of Servants, overall coordinator of Shepherd Couple, head of Special Services Ministry, and resource speaker; Confederation of Non-Stock Savings and Loan Association, Inc. (CONSLA) as member of the Ways and Means committee; and KAPAMALQ, City Hall, Quezon City as Member, Ex-President/Vice President, and Officer of the Board of Trustees. For his active community service, Professor Abis was a recipient of Certificates of Recognition from St. Paul the Apostle Parish and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) given in 2008 and 2007, respectively. VICE ADMIRAL MARIO A. CATACUTAN AFP (RET.) CLASS 1972 Vice Admiral Mario Alberto Catacutan was born on September 4, 1955 in Murphy, Quezon City, the fourth child of Mauro Santos Catacutan and Claudia Alberto. He is married to the former Maria Orkidea Monleon. He graduated from the Juan Sumulong High School as First Honorable Mention of Class 1972. He entered the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) as a cadet in 1973, and graduated as a member of the “Masikap” Class of 1977. He was commissioned and subsequently Called to Active Duty in the Regular Force, AFP as an Ensign (2Lt) effective 01 March 1977. Vice Admiral Catacutan completed various courses both here and abroad which prepared him to assume sensitive positions in the AFP hierarchy and subsequently earned his promotion to general rank. He is also a graduate of Masters in National Security Administration (MNSA) at the National Defense College of the Philippines in 2004. His field of specialization as Resource Manager encompassing logistics, personnel and finance led him to assume various assignments in the AFP, namely: Commander of Naval Logistics Center (NLC); Chief, Office of the AFP Bids and Awards Committee (OAFPBAC); Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, J4; Chief of AFP Resource Management Office (AFPRMO); and Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, J1. He capped his military career when he was designated The Inspector General AFP where he earned his third star as Vice Admiral. In his 38 years of active military service, Vice Admiral Catacutan was a recipient of numerous medals, awards, plaques and certificates of recognition for his invaluable service and dedication to duty, most notably are: three (3) Distinguished Service Stars, the Philippine Legion of Honor, and two (2) Outstanding Achievement Medals. He was also given the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the National Defense College of the Philippines Alumni Association in 2008 and a Plaque of Distinction as Outstanding PMA Alumnus in August, 2011. Vice Admiral Catacutan retired from the active military service last 04 September, 2011 upon reaching the age of 56. An advocate of servant leadership, he left an indelible legacy to the men and women of the Armed Forces of the Philippines with his “farewell” valedictory address “My career as a soldier for the Filipino people is ended today. But my lifetime vocation as a soldier of Christ will eternally live on even beyond death.” Outstanding Alumnus for Professional Achievement
ARCHITECT RESTITUTO RENIA Class 1976 Restituto Renia is a graduate of Architecture from the University of Sto. Tomas. He is a multi-talented architect and artist who is professionally engaged as an interior designer, landscape designer, lighting designer, design consultant , San Juanico builder-contractor, painter, and sculptor. Architect Renia possesses the profound ideas and concepts of a brilliant artist and architectural genius with his innate talents and learned technical skills manifested in his superb and magical interior designs, sculptural “obras”, and themed architecture. Among his amazing and outstanding creations include the L Arc en Ciel, Sanctuario de San Pablo, the Lubao House, House on a Hill, and a rest house in Ayala, Alabang. Outstanding Alumnus for International Understanding
B747 2nd OFFICER/FLIGHT ENGINEER JAIME PABROS Class 1967 Second Officer and Flight Engineer Jaime Pabros works with the United States military for 26 years and is now engaged with commercial aviation . He is currently connected with Evergreen International Airlines where he is involved with global humanitarian relief operations, job contracting with the United States Department of Defense, and chartered flight operations. He was specifically assigned to bring and deliver state-of-the-art equipment and supplies to United States scientists who are doing exploration and investigations in Antartica. Likewise, he was involved in carrying and delivering relief supplies for displaced population in Afghanistan. Previous to these assignments, he was with the United States Air Force as aircraft engineering technician, chief planner and scheduler, job controller, combat logistic and support technician, and C141 and KC10 flight engineer. He had also been given a special duty assignment with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as a Shuttle Systems Engineer for more than seven years during which time he had learned and became competent in the different control systems of a space shuttle. Flight Engineer Pabros is a bemedalled outstanding flight officer with several honors and awards attached to his name, namely: Kuwait liberation medal- operation desert shield and desert storm; Southwest Asia service medal- operation Iraqi freedom and enduring freedom; Good conduct medal; National Defense service medal; USAF meritorious service medal; Humanitarian service medal-in support of operation in Somalia, Haiti, Iraq, Turkey, and Kosovo; Combat readiness medal; Phil presidential unit citation- while stationed in Clark air base; Vietnam service medal-operation linebacker; Secretary of the Armed Forces aerial achievement medal- in support of operation enduring freedom; and Armed Forces expeditionary medal- Antarctica- operation deep freeze for national science foundation- and Afghanistan - in support of operation enduring freedom and Iraqi freedom. COMMANDER ERNEST P. GIERE III Class 1967 While still alive, Ernest P Giere III was a naval officer with the rank of Commander in the Philippine Navy. His career began when he was commissioned and subsequently called to active duty in the Regular Force, AFP as an Ensign upon his graduation from the United States Naval Academy in 1973. He was promoted to LTJG in 1976, to LTSG in 1979, to LTCOMDR in 1984 and to Commander in 1989.. Commander Giere studied aeronautical engineering at FEATI University. He was also admitted to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Maryland where he took up Aerospace Engineering and became the first Filipino to have earned the degree. His feat in the USNA has not been duplicated yet by any Filipino until now. He also did further studies at the Asian Institute of Management. Because of his technical background and interest in developing his expertise, he was assigned in the Philippine Navy's naval research unit where he was actively involved in various projects, one of which was Project Sta. Barbara of then President Marcos. He was also sent for training in Germany for some months and when he returned home he already knew how to design missiles or rockets. Aside from these, he was also involved in naval development projects in Leyte which helped the local population cope up with their problems about sea transportation. Commander Giere graduated from Juan Sumulong High School in 1967 where he was also the Literary Editor of the Lodestar and awarded as Physicist of the Year. NORIZA BUAQUEÑA-GUERRA, CPA Class 1972 Noriza Buaqueña-Guerra, a Certified Public Accountant, is Consultant and Managing Director of Semper Premium Business Consultancy that has offices in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Quezon City, Philippines. She is a founding member and officer of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants - Western Region Chapter in Saudi Arabia - where she serves as its incumbent Chapter President. She is also actively involved in the activities of Toastmasters International/Tanglaw Toastmasters Club/Division C and currently serves as Area Governor of Area 11-Division C-District 79. Likewise, she is at present Executive Officer and Board of Director of the Philippine Professional Organizations-Jeddah Chapter. Noriza enjoys a sterling career as a CPA that spans almost four decades while occupying various accounting and management positions: Chief Accountant and Accounting Supervisor of SAUDIA – Saudi Arabian International School, an American International School owned by Saudia Airlines; Director for Audit of Rustan’s Supermarkets Inc.; Comptroller of ESAR and Son’s Group of Companies; Comptroller, Credit and Collection Manager, and Accounting and Officer Manager of Metals Engineering Resources Corporation; and Staff Auditor of Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co, CPAs (SGV). Proof of Noriza’s successful professional life are several awards and recognitions, the most current of which are those given by PICPA Western Region Chapter, namely: Plaque of Recognition as “Lecturer/Reviewer” for the CPA Review Assistance Program in 2011; Plaque of Recognition as “Lecturer” for the “Accounting for Non-Accountants “ Course in 2012; and Presidential leadership Award for 2011-2012 given in 2012. As to her schooling, Noriza graduated from Juan Sumulong High School as Salutatorian of Class 1972. She was also JSHS Model Student of the Year in SY 1970-71. She finished her Degree in Bachelor of Science Business Administration-Major in Accounting at the University of the East and earned units for Masters in Business Administration at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business. CAPTAIN TEODORICO F. DE GUZMAN Class 1977 Captain Teodorico De Guzman, an international mariner and seafarer by profession, is currently the Vice President for Fleet Operation of Magsaysay MOL Marine, Inc. (MAGMOL), a company built with the combined strengths of the industry’s best – Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) of Tokyo, Japan and Magsaysay Maritime Corporation (MMC) of Manila, Philippines. Capt. De Guzman oversees the training and deployment of more than 4,000 seafarers to 176 MOL vessels, serving the crew management needs of its 10 MOL Principals located in Japan, Hongkong, Singapore, Oman and Netherlands. As part of the management team, Capt. De Guzman is credited for his active role in winning various recognition and awards given to MAGMOL for its contributions to the Philippine seafaring industry: Top Performer (2000, 2002, and 2005) by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration; One of the three best training institutes in Asia-Pacific by Lloyds List Maritime Asia Awards for three consecutive years (2004-2006); Presidential Distinction Award at the First International Employers Awards of the Department of Labor and Employment; and Ministerial Award at the 2nd International Maritime Awards Aside from earning various training certificates related to seafaring, international navigation and ship management, Capt. De Guzman also holds several professional licenses and competency documents, namely: Panama Booklet GMDSS, Seabook Master, and GMDSS Endorsement I/10.1 , and Master II/2 issued by Panama Maritime; GMDSS General Operator IV/2, Master II/2, STCW Endorsement, and STCW COC issued by PRC; GMDSS General Operator IV/2 issued by NTC, and the Pre-Board Briefing issued by MAGMOL After earning his high school diploma from Juan Sumulong High School where he also received the leadership award in Scouting in 1977, Capt. De Guzman enrolled at Philippine Maritime Institute where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation. |
